DirectX explained
Gaming and multimedia applications are some of the most satisfying programs you can get for your PC, but getting them to run properly isn’t always as easy as it could be. First, the PC architecture was never designed as a gaming platform. Second, the wide-ranging nature of the PC means that one person’s machine can be different from another. While games consoles all contain the same hardware, PCs don’t: the massive range of difference can make gaming a headache.

To alleviate as much of the pain as possible, Microsoft needed to introduce a common standard which all games and multimedia applications could follow – a common interface between the OS and whatever hardware is installed in the PC, if you like. This common interface is DirectX, something which can be the source of much confusion.
DirectX is an interface designed to make certain programming tasks much easier, for both the game developer and the rest of us who just want to sit down and play the latest blockbuster. Before we can explain what DirectX is and how it works though, we need a little history lesson.
DirectX historyAny game needs to perform certain tasks again and again. It needs to watch for your input from mouse, joystick or keyboard, and it needs to be able to display screen images and play sounds or music. That’s pretty much any game at the most simplistic level.
Imagine how incredibly complex this was for programmers developing on the early pre-Windows PC architecture, then. Each programmer needed to develop their own way of reading the keyboard or detecting whether a joystick was even attached, let alone being used to play the game. Specific routines were needed even to display the simplest of images on the screen or play a simple sound.
Essentially, the game programmers were talking directly to your PC’s hardware at a fundamental level. When Microsoft introduced Windows, it was imperative for the stability and success of the PC platform that things were made easier for both the developer and the player. After all, who would bother writing games for a machine when they had to reinvent the wheel every time they began work on a new game? Microsoft’s idea was simple: stop programmers talking directly to the hardware, and build a common toolkit which they could use instead. DirectX was born.
How it worksAt the most basic level, DirectX is an interface between the hardware in your PC and Windows itself, part of the Windows API or Application Programming Interface. Let’s look at a practical example. When a game developer wants to play a sound file, it’s simply a case of using the correct library function. When the game runs, this calls the DirectX API, which in turn plays the sound file. The developer doesn’t need to know what type of sound card he’s dealing with, what it’s capable of, or how to talk to it. Microsoft has provided DirectX, and the sound card manufacturer has provided a DirectX-capable driver. He asks for the sound to be played, and it is – whichever machine it runs on.
From our point of view as gamers, DirectX also makes things incredibly easy – at least in theory. You install a new sound card in place of your old one, and it comes with a DirectX driver. Next time you play your favourite game you can still hear sounds and music, and you haven’t had to make any complex configuration changes.
Originally, DirectX began life as a simple toolkit: early hardware was limited and only the most basic graphical functions were required. As hardware and software has evolved in complexity, so has DirectX. It’s now much more than a graphical toolkit, and the term has come to encompass a massive selection of routines which deal with all sorts of hardware communication. For example, the DirectInput routines can deal with all sorts of input devices, from simple two-button mice to complex flight joysticks. Other parts include DirectSound for audio devices and DirectPlay provides a toolkit for online or multiplayer gaming.
DirectX versionsThe current version of DirectX at time of writing is DirectX 9.0. This runs on all versions of Windows from Windows 98 up to and including Windows Server 2003 along with every revision in between. It doesn’t run on Windows 95 though: if you have a machine with Windows 95 installed, you’re stuck with the older and less capable 8.0a. Windows NT 4 also requires a specific version – in this case, it’s DirectX 3.0a.
With so many versions of DirectX available over the years, it becomes difficult to keep track of which version you need. In all but the most rare cases, all versions of DirectX are backwardly compatible – games which say they require DirectX 7 will happily run with more recent versions, but not with older copies. Many current titles explicitly state that they require DirectX 9, and won’t run without the latest version installed. This is because they make use of new features introduced with this version, although it has been known for lazy developers to specify the very latest version as a requirement when the game in question doesn’t use any of the new enhancements. Generally speaking though, if a title is version locked like this, you will need to upgrade before you can play. Improvements to the core DirectX code mean you may even see improvements in many titles when you upgrade to the latest build of DirectX. Downloading and installing DirectX need not be complex, either.
Upgrading DirectXAll available versions of Windows come with DirectX in one form or another as a core system component which cannot be removed, so you should always have at least a basic implementation of the system installed on your PC. However, many new games require the very latest version before they work properly, or even at all.
Generally, the best place to install the latest version of DirectX from is the dedicated section of the Microsoft Web site, which is found at www.microsoft.com/windows/directx. As we went to press, the most recent build available for general download was DirectX 9.0b. You can download either a simple installer which will in turn download the components your system requires as it installs, or download the complete distribution package in one go for later offline installation.
Another good source for DirectX is games themselves. If a game requires a specific version, it’ll be on the installation CD and may even be installed automatically by the game’s installer itself. You won’t find it on magazine cover discs though, thanks to Microsoft’s licensing terms.
Diagnosing problems
Diagnosing problems with a DirectX installation can be problematic, especially if you don’t know which one of the many components is causing your newly purchased game to fall over. Thankfully, Microsoft provides a useful utility called the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, although this isn’t made obvious. You won’t find this tool in the Start Menu with any version of Windows, and each tends to install it in a different place.
The easiest way to use it is to open the Start Menu’s Run dialog, type in dxdiag and then click OK. When the application first loads, it takes a few seconds to interrogate your DirectX installation and find any problems. First, the DirectX Files tab displays version information on each one of the files your installation uses. The Notes section at the bottom is worth checking, as missing or corrupted files will be flagged here.
The tabs marked Display, Sound, Music, Input and Network all relate to specific areas of DirectX, and all but the Input tab provide tools to test the correct functioning on your hardware. Finally, the More Help tab provides a useful way to start the DirectX Troubleshooter, Microsoft’s simple linear problem solving tool for many common DirectX issues.

Balance between game players

If you create a two-player game, you better make sure that the best player normally wins, and not the most lucky one. Imagine a strategy game in which two players compete with each other. As in most strategy games they have to build up a city and for this they need wood. Now imagine there is just one forest in the world and one player starts very close to this forest and the other is far away from it. This gives the first player an advantage that will most likely win him the game. So the game is highly unbalanced. A game of chess on the other hand is highly balanced. Each player has the same pieces and can make the same move. The only problem is that one player can start and this is actually an advantage in chess. But this is balanced out because in a match each player can start the same number of times. Chess is a symmetric game. Symmetric games are well balanced. But symmetry is also a bit boring. Imagine that in the strategy game I mentioned the world looks completely symmetrical and each player plays the same race with the same units. That would make the game less appealing. Still it is used rather often. For example, the multiplayer maps in Red Alert II are very symmetrical. The real game design challenge is to make a non-symmetrical game that is still rather balanced.
One way of achieving this is to use fake asymmetry. Let me demonstrate this with an example. In our strategy game we let the first player start behind a mountain range while the second player has his city behind a river. The first player we give the ability to create boats while the second player has equipment to drill tunnels. This looks very asymmetric but the tunnels can be used to pass the mountain range and in a similar way the boats can pass the river. So balance is restored again. Many strategy games use some type of fake asymmetry. Races might look rather different but in the end the possibilities are very similar.

Tips for Game Designers

A game for children should be rather different than a game for adults. And a game for hard-core gamers should be rather different from a game for less experienced players. You need to pick the correct audience.Playing a game is about control The player should feel in control of the game. Not the other way round. Uninterruptible sequences in which the control is taken out of the hands of the player still occur in many games and often lead to frustration. The more freedom there is for the player, the better. There is though a catch here. A game is also about surprises and dramatic effects. Such effects can be created much better if the player is not in control.
Whenever you need to constrain the user, try to do this in a natural way.  Game objects and resources in a game you normally control certain game objects, like the main character, units, a car, etc. In some games you can control just one object while in other games, for example strategy games, you can control many different objects. Besides the game objects that the player controls, there are normally many other objects that are controlled by the computer. The game objects the player controls play a certain role in the game. This is an important property. In other programs you also control certain objects, like buttons, but these do not play a role in the program. They are only meant to give certain commands to the program. Besides controlling game objects you must often also manage certain resources. This is most evident in strategy games and simulation games in which you must manage the amount of food, wood, stone, gold, etc. But also in many other games there are resources to manage, like ammunition for your weapons, a shield that can be used a limited amount of time, etc. Careful planning of resources and their use can add many nice aspects to the game play. The game designer must balance the availability of resource with their need, to achieve interesting game play. A game needs a goal this is a crucial ingredient in a game. People want to win a game and, hence, there must be a goal to reach. For long games there should also be sub-goals, like finishing a particular level, defeating a certain monster, or acquiring a new spell. Reaching a goal or sub-goal should result in a reward. Such a reward can consist of a score or some nice movie, but it is better if the reward is actually part of the game play itself, for example a new weapon, some additional useful information, etc. Reaching Goals An important part of a game is that there is a goal and the game challenges the player to try and achieve this goal. Actually, there are often many different sub-goals. Goals come in all sorts and shapes. A goal can be to try and shoot an enemy plane, or to finish a level by collecting all diamonds, or to reach the highest score or to finish the game. Clearly some of these goals are short-term goals while others are long-term goals that can only be reached by playing the game for weeks. A good game is filled with these goals and the player should be rewarded when he reaches one of the goals. Rewards give an important additional motivation to try and reach the goals. Goals should not be too easy to achieve.

There must be a challenge. And when the game progresses the goals should become harder to reach and the player has to become better at the game to achieve them. This learning curve is very important. In the beginning the player needs to understand the controls and the mechanisms in the game. This is best done by letting him achieve some simple goals. Later on, the player understands the game better and will be ready for bigger challenges.

Obviously, when goals are hard to achieve, there is a big chance of failure. You have to be careful with failure though. It can easily put the player off, making him stop playing. And that is definitely not what you want to happen. To avoid this it is crucial that, in the case of failure, the player always has the feeling he made a mistake that he could have avoided. It should not be the game’s fault that the player lost, but his own. It is one of the aspects that distinguish games like PacMan and Tetris from other games. You always have the feeling you did something stupid. You can be pretty angry with yourself when it goes wrong and you are determined to avoid this mistake the next time. This feeling keeps you playing the game. On the other hand, consider a maze game in which from time to time at a random spot a flash of lighting occurs, killing you if you happen to be in the neighborhood. In such a game you, as a player, did nothing wrong. You just had bad luck to be at the wrong spot. This is very frustrating. You are not angry with yourself but with the game. And you probably soon stop playing it.

What is Game

A movie is not a game, but why? What elements of games are missing in movies? The main difference is that there is no interaction of the viewer with the environment or characters in a movie. The viewer does not control the movie and cannot make decisions that influence the outcome of the movie. The final outcome of the movie is fixed, you can’t change it! In game the final out come depends on the gamers who are in control. A puzzle is not a game, many games contain puzzle elements. But a puzzle is static, while a game is dynamic and changes while you are playing it. A satisfying game can be played over and over again and there are different strategies that lead to success.
So what is a (computer) game then?  A computer game is a software program in which one or more players make decisions through the control of game objects and resources, in pursuit of a goal. The definition does not talk about graphics, or sound effect, or in-game movies. Such aspects obviously make it appealing, but they are not the essential aspects of games.
Most computer games have a real-time element that is not present in board games. The game continues even when the players do nothing. This can lead to enhanced excitement and a better feeling of presence in the game world. Games can adapt to the players making it satisfying for largely different players, both beginners and advanced. The possibility of having computer-controlled opponents adds many new challenges. Game Designers often forget that you make the game not for yourself but for the people that are going to play it. So you need to think about for whom you are creating game ? Their age, their location, play with the mind of your gamers.

Careers@ Gaming !

“Gaming is estimated to be the fastest growing sector in the Media and Entertainment Industry. This growth is not only expected to come from Mobile gaming but also from substantial increase in Console, PC and online games. With the increasing number of casual and active gamers, the evolution of this space is likely to be extremely interesting” as quoted by  Mr. Jehil Thakkar – Executive Director  – KPMG in India.

The Indian gaming industry is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 49% to reach USD 830 million by 2012 which was USD 167 million in 2008.

With the dawn of greater technology, the game industry is churning out dozens of companies engaged in video game production and development. Gaming industry is considered as one of the most modern professions, with a great deal of specialization varying from broader design principles to more definite tasks such as level design and game balance. So a plethora of career options are available for aspirants from artists to musicians to sound engineers to programmers in this field.

Gaming is one of the largest segment of the entertainment industry and a multi billion dollar one, successful across the world. It has become one of the most highly sought after career in today’s modern world with the growing demand for computer, mobile and video games.

A career in Gaming is an exciting but a highly competitive field with a blend of technology, creativity and fun. It is also an amazing and interesting career for those individuals who dedicate their lives for creating new and improved games.

Some of the Career Prospects in the Gaming Industry are:

Game Developer

Game Designers- further classified as Lead Designers, Level Designers

Game Artists – concept artist, 2D/ 3D artists, modelers, character animators, texture artists

Game Programmers- In big companies, game programmers may be classified as Lead programmers (in charge of all programming for the game), Artificial intelligence (AI) programmers (who develops the logic of the game to simulate intelligence in enemies and opponents), Sound programmers, Game programmers, UI programmers, multiplayer/ network programmers etc.

Network Programmer

Game/ Script Writers

Audio/ Sound Engineers

Game Testers

Game Management- game producers, art director, technical directors, development directors, project managers etc.

What the employers really look for in a candidate are the levels of  creativity, technical intelligence, design sensibilities besides their educational qualifications. With their key skills in game designing, candidates can find employment in these firms as junior game designer, level designer, game designer, lead designer, content designer, user interface designer, game tester or writer etc.

Online game designers may work as freelancers. But for this, one has to be multifaceted, i.e. they should do all the basic artwork, sound effects and music, programming and coding etc. by themselves. A graduate in game development can also seek employment opportunities in the field of software development, computer programming, industrial design, animation or writing for film and television, project management and more.

Game designing may be confused with animation, but there is a vast difference between both these fields. It is not compulsory for an animator to have superior game knowledge, but they work together with game designers and 3D modelers to create animations for games. But a game designer must have an in-depth knowledge of games and the art of sketching.

Gaming is starting to reach a level of maturity and sophistication from an affordable technology perspective and it can finally provide what might be a serious opportunity for learning.

A  wide spread adoption of “Game based education” maybe perceived as  a Fundamental shift, but we are awaiting when educators will successfully include gaming in their curriculum…Gaming has been used in education for years – now it is just getting more advanced.

Let’s abolish the word “Busy”

A silent struggle, betrayed by the tension in my muscles, as I place the telephone back on the cradle…the resentment obvious under my smile…as the voice at the other end says – BUSY…
I ‘ve begun to abhor this 4 letter word which slithers into the vitality of the soul – “ BUSY “-
I can absolutely do nothing but frown at this strange characteristic of human persona…
which is inevitably oozing into the mechanical system of every human – The art of being BUSY…
If I tried to fight everyone, reason with “why busy” I would eventually exhaust myself and go down in flames…to me this apparition is like foul cigars, knife twisting tactics or more so like a plaque…The irony of Being Busy is that it evolves around us a grotesque physical environment which sadly is different from social and psychological ones of today. The predicament of everybody just being swallowed in by the unfortunate swirling whirlpool of – ‘Being Busy’ is creating a crater in the heart of loved ones who constantly wait to hear from us.
Its so often thwarting when people use the Word Busy as a Cop-out…It is a euphemism for being over scheduled, frantic with deadlines, boss being in town or a social dinner…the truth is, people are so bamboozled as what to do next that they keep checking Twitter to tell people how busy they are…I feel nothing but empathy for such people who probably forgot to perceive the sun in their backyard when they left for work in the morning.
The essence of “Living “is an overpowering emotion that communicates itself in the gestures, in your tone of voice, in subtle signs that are more powerful for being unspoken… Don’t mute your colors with the colors of painting yourself busy…The best things in life are free to all. The sun shines on everyone , the moon accompanied by countless stars , leads even the beasts to pasture, what can be lovelier than flowing of water , glorifying yourself in love, the tinkling of laughter – don’t restrain yourself…Release your self from the crutches of being Busy …exalt in life…you just live once!
We all have the same 24 hours to fill. Everyone’s are filled with something. The difference is that the “busy” people feel frenetic during those hours. Those of you, who walk around telling everyone how busy you are, get a grip. Don’t get infected with the desire of staying busy, it might happen that some day this vague desire could become an impulse…
Anxiety disorders are on the rise. Accidents are increasing. Being too busy is hurting our health, hurting our well being, can you recount any levels of pleasure and enjoyment, we are deteriorating as humans, and this a result of our modern busy lifestyles. Spouses are waiting on each other, they are involuntarily moving nearer a magnet which repels in the long run. Friends have no time to hug each other any more; they are busy squabbling about their differences. Parents live with ambiguity as to what time is the right time to talk to their siblings as they are suspended into the competitive world…and intercepting them would be blasphemy…
A cloud of unspoken feelings hang in the air before me like profanity, like an elusive, enigmatic aura and my heart instantaneously cries out an earnest appeal to all to move with lightning speed to embrace Life. Don’t let your senses get dulled, don’t let that someone walk away, don’t always be so rational, don’t forget to wipe somebody’s tear, don’t forget to smile at someone who needs it most…Most of all Don’t forget to LIVE”
Its about time to orchestrate those little details in your life – colors, gifts , little ceremonies and rainbows…and LOVE !

Leadership is action…not position!!!

Strolling along the interminable wide sections of a large bookstore my eyes rest majorly on the display of titles related to  ‘Born to be a leader’, ‘How to be a leader’, ‘Leadership skills’ and the list is endless…There is a revolution of books aiming at defining, analyzing and grinding the qualities of “ effective leadership”… Pondering over this “ Leadership” subject for long, I did come to  terms with the fact that it is a prerequisite to achieving success and how ‘ It is a big deal and its getting bigger everyday’
We are at the dawn of the 21st century and the pace of change is accelerating and seeping its way into the most convoluted canals of tough business or its policies…and the need of the hour is – EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP.
Well speaking for myself  – I feel leadership is not rocket science, it is Never say “Never” spirit, on no account giving up, attempting the impossible and persistence of one’s character…
To possess an innate ability to navigate in the rough waters of change, somebody who sees an opportunity even when the lights are out…
Students are often taught to be good Managers but what they really need to learn is to how to make a difference to the world …let the juvenile bring along with them more integrity, purpose and sense of values to their work…because what accounts for their being good leaders would be their charisma and being Big picture visionaries.
The best leader I’ve encountered on the journey towards life would be my Dad – who imbibed in me the qualities of overcoming the unexpected hurdles, encouraging me to pick up causes even if it required a change, always remain committed despite setbacks…and that is the message I would like disseminate to all my young friends here at Virtual Infocom who would be donning the role of Managers eventually.
Some of the most unbeaten leaders are those who enthuse creativity in others and someone who is determined enough to cultivate an atmosphere in their organization that welcomes innovations. I know a lot of CEO’s who are creative thinkers and lead creative organizations and my article would be incomplete without the mention of Mr. Arijit Bhattacharyya , Founder & CEO of VirtualInfocom, whose personal passion for work matches his aspiration to see Education burgeon in all parts of the world. For many of us here he is a “Leader” who leads by example.
Occasionally what we tend to overlook is “ Macro Leadership” which deals with vision and strategy which evolves the entire organization and not just ourselves, he should be able to maneuver across the entire of continuum of  organizing people to achieve a Common GOAL…because leadership is a potent combination of strategy and character…
To sum it up – Leaders Dream and they refuse to let anybody get in the way of achieving their dreams. They are pragmatic yet unrelenting, polite but resolute. They believe in a constant and consistent drive towards their GOAL. You can be a LEADER – when it matters enough to YOU…

The WOMAN – Entrepreneur !!

“Women are fragile.” “Women are indecisive.” “Women are too emotional.” “Women are inexperienced.”…Oh! These adjectives are just unnatural abruptness to the most beautiful creation of God -  “ Woman”

Such pre-conceptions consequently stand in the way of success for even the most capable and talented women in their professional lives…why women in India continue to struggle to prove their worth in what is often described as ‘a man’s world’.
For years, women’s progress has been cast as a struggle for equality. But what if equality isn’t the end point?

Traditionally, entrepreneurship has been a male – dominated pursuit, but many of today’s most memorable and stirring entrepreneurs are women…and I salute this eternal transcendent spirit of the woman…because the “ WOMAN “ I know is on the mission of unprecedented role reversal…

The transition to the next millennium is where the women will create new paradigms of being a daughter, a wife, a mother and an entrepreneur. The growing conviction of the uniqueness of her identity, her significance and the connotation of her life in herself…

Indian women today have crossed a major threshold and entered the realm of converting their dreams into commitments…she exudes umpteen independence and competence and mind you me, don’t stop the raging lioness…

A wo – man, who represents a challenge and a stimulant for the generations to come…she is like the towering figure which moves into the world and yet hungers not to appear onstage, or shout out for recognition, she is unnerved by the rattling of the surreal fools whose tailor cut orders are a part of her job…she lives up to her standards and bows no more…
The woman has discovered her voice at her work place, which had been silenced for centuries, there will be no end to her endeavors because nothing is distant and nothing that is out of reach for her… Women in top management positions are still a rare species. But things are changing and more and more women are heading teams and delivering results.
So, why not open doors that should have been opened a long time ago and this could give women a chance to change the system once they are in positions of power.
Well…Give them the right tools and they will rise to the challenge…
